Understanding True Leadership as Influence

Understanding True Leadership as Influence

Leadership isn't solely defined by a job title or a corner office. At its core, leadership is influence. When you are in a position to shape the thoughts or behaviors of those around you, you are leading. It's a profound process, yet remarkably simple.

As Hans Finizel states in The Top Ten Mistakes Leaders Make, "I tend to view the profound process of leadership in terms of a very simple definition: Leadership is influence. That’s it. A one-word definition. Anyone who influences someone else to do something has led that person. Another way to say this might be: A leader takes people where they would never go on their own." This perspective broadens our understanding, showing that true leadership is about impact, not just authority.

Think about it: you don't need to be a CEO or a manager to exert influence. You are likely leading in various areas of your life already. Whether it's guiding your family, inspiring your friends, steering a project in your business, or contributing to your church or community, every instance where you influence others to move forward, to think differently, or to act with purpose, you are demonstrating leadership.

Take Action:

  • Reflect: Where in your daily life are you already influencing others?

  • Identify: How can you intentionally use your influence to uplift or guide someone this week?
