The greatest battle you will ever lead is the one taking place between your ears. As a leader, your mindset dictates your actions. If you allow negative thoughts to run unchecked, you’ll eventually find yourself stuck in a rut of insecurity or burnout.
The solution isn't just "positive thinking"—it’s truth replacement. Scripture calls this the "renewing of your mind." We take a lie that feels true and replace it with a promise that is true. Using the first chapter of Ephesians, here are six "In Him" truths to help you reset your focus.
“...who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.” You aren't waiting to be blessed; you have already been given the full "inheritance" of heaven's resources. You are operating from a position of abundance, not lack.
“Even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.” You were not an afterthought. God set His sights on you before the world began. Because of Jesus, He views you as "blameless"—without a single spot or stain.
“He predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ...” In the Roman world, an adopted son was a chosen heir who could never be disowned. You have the full legal standing of a child in God's family. Your place at the table is permanent.
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses...” To be "redeemed" means to be bought out of a slave market. You have been purchased at the highest possible price, and your "account" of sins has been wiped clean.
“...making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose...” You are no longer in the dark. God has brought you into His "inner circle" to understand the ultimate purpose of history—to unite all things in Christ.
“...were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance...” In ancient times, a seal was a mark of ownership and authenticity. The Holy Spirit in you is God’s "down payment" (guarantee) that He will finish what He started in you.
When a negative thought attacks your identity, you must use these truths as a direct rebuttal. Use this guide to exchange lies for affirmations:
Negative Statement: “ I am a mistake or unwanted.”
Positive Replacement: “I was chosen before the foundation of the world” (v.4)
Negative Statement: “I am defined by my failures.”
Positive Replacement: “I am redeemed and forgiven according to the riches of His grace.” (v.7)
Negative Statement: “I don’t have what it takes.”
Positive Replacement: “I am already blessed with every spiritual blessing.” (v.3)
Negative Statement: “I am alone and unsupported”
Positive Replacement: “ I am a legal heir, adopted into God’s family.” (v5)
Identify the Lie: Write down one negative thought about yourself that has been on "repeat" lately.
Speak the Truth: Pick one of the six truths above that directly contradicts that lie. Speak it out loud every time that thought enters your mind this week. Don't just think it—say it.
